Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is counselling?

Counselling is not giving advice to someone. Rather it is a form of assistance that will deepen your understanding of your problem and develop the means to deal with them. Going for a counselling session in no way indicates that you are helpless or incapable of solving your own problems.

Who all can go to the Counselling Cell?

All the students, studying in Sant Baba Bhag Singh University are welcomed for discussions/assistance on personal, academic and career planning related issues. Apart from counselling to students, cell is devoted to counsel teaching and non-teaching staff of the university, whoever needs it

What kind of problems can I talk to a counsellor about?

You can approach to us for assistance in personal problems, academic problems, career awareness and for the following situations:

  • Uneasy or fearful in facing your parents because of your academic performance.

  • Sometime you are not also feeling well but don’t know the actual reason.
  • Some strange behavior of your friends which may be alarming or unusual.
  • Confusion with career related decision etc.

How do I present my issues?

It hardly matters how you present your problem. The counsellor will help you explore the matter and will keep referring to you to clarify his/her understanding.

What will the counsellor think of me - will they think badly about me?

We at counselling cell believe that a good number of students need much more in terms of Guidance, Counselling and Mentoring than ‘teaching the subject well’ from the teacher. They need to be listened to at some time. Many of our problems arise just because we are human. We all make mistakes and have to learn from them, and it is normal to learn and relearn from our experiences. So, there is no question of thinking bad of anyone. We at counselling cell are here for our students who need a listening ear along their way in finding the best way out of the problem.

What if I still feel ashamed of my problems?

We do accept that most of us feel some shame when we have problems and so don't want to publicize our difficulties. This is one of the reasons we place a great emphasis on confidentiality.

How confidential is counselling?

We are all here to support you. Whatever you share, will be kept confidential. Strict confidentiality is ensured. The trust you place on us by coming to the counselling cell will not be breached.

If I have had counselling, does it go on my record?

If a student approaches Counselling Service, nothing about it will go on his/her record.

Can I seek advice regarding a friend or colleague?

If you want to approach us regarding a friend, you are most welcome. We'll try our best to help you help your friend, while still helping you to stay anonynomous.
